Well, that's what about half of the slaves in the South got. Was handsomely rewarded.
The Civil War started because the Confederates wanted to defend inhumane & cruel slavery practices, yes.
But most slaves were treated well, because only a fool would mistreat their slaves.
Well, it was a criminal element of slaveholders doing it. Something like 30% of the slaveholding population.
